India Mahdavi
India Mahdavi (b. 1962, Tehran) is an Iranian-French architect and interior designer based in Paris. Born to an Iranian father and an Egyptian-English mother, she spent a nomadic childhood between the United States, Germany, and France. She studied architecture at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris (Diplôme DPLG, 1987) and pursued further studies in New York at the School of Visual Arts (graphic design), Parsons (furniture design), and the Cooper Union (industrial design). From 1990 to 1997 she served as Art Director in Christian Liaigre's studio.
In 1999 she founded her studio imh interiors in Paris, opening her showroom and launching her furniture collection in 2003 and a second boutique, Petits Objets, in 2012. Her practice covers hotels, restaurants, private residences, retail spaces, and cultural institutions. Projects include The Gallery at Sketch in London, the Hôtel du Cloître in Arles, the Coburg Bar at The Connaught in London, Monte Carlo Beach, and CondesaDF in Mexico City. Her furniture — notably the Bishop stool/table — is produced under her own label.
Mahdavi was named Designer of the Year by Maison et Objet in 2004 and inducted into the Interior Design Hall of Fame in 2019. She continues to work from Paris across hospitality, residential, and cultural commissions internationally.
